Temptation is a fact of life.

It’s not about whether you will be tempted or not, it’s WHEN you’re tempted. Temptation is something that happens to everyone, all of the time.

Jesus told us in the “lord’s prayer” to pray “lead us NOT into temptation”. Notice that he did not say, “Lord, make us not be tempted”. He knew that the Devil is here on earth and he knew that as Christians we will always be tempted.

The enemy seems to really begin to throw temptations on us when we are in the heat of a trial, on the fence with one foot in the world and one in the word, or going through a stressful time.

Trials come into our lives

1.      Some are demonically induced

2.      Some are divinely permitted

3.      Some we get ourselves into with our own foolishness.

It’s in these trials, that we are tempted. We learn to our crutches and temptations when things become difficult. The greatest temptation we will have is to be self centered and only worry about ourselves.

LUKE 22:40-46 Jesus’ greatest hour of temptation on the Mount of Olives. It was painful. He begged God to take this cup from him. He then woke the disciples up and told them to “GET UP” and PRAY that they don’t fall into temptation. Temptation is real!

What are your weaknesses? Mine have always been ciggs, whisky, and just being a man.

Some are sexual lusts, criticism toward others, gossiping, judging, etc…. DON’T BE TEMPTED

5 ways to avoid temptation:

1. BE WISE

Proverbs Chapter 5 v. 1-2

MY SON, be attentive to my Wisdom [godly Wisdom learned by actual and costly experience], and incline your ear to my understanding [of what is becoming and prudent for you],

2That you may exercise proper discrimination and discretion and your lips may guard and keep knowledge and the wise answer [to temptation].

Don’t be foolish. What is wise? Wisdom is doing now what you are going to be satisfied with later on. Make wise choices. Some of us need to watch our mouth. My gifting is my mouth so I need to work on being quite. I may really want to give my opinion, but sometimes I hold back. Other times I don’t. I speak my mind. Now my wife is crying, the kids are crying, etc….Wisdom is common sense.

What will be the result if you cave into your temptation one more time? When Satin comes in, drops images into your mind, tries to make you have that drink, talk to that guy, take more hours than you work, do what my Father in law does: He commands in the name of Jesus for Satin to leave.

DON’T CAVE IN…. When you do it’s ALWAYS followed by Guilt and that just drains you.

2. BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN RESIST TEMPTATION

You must muster faith to believe that you can resist temptation. If you overeat, pray that God gives you the strength. Are you telling me that you can’t resist a Big Mac when the Lord of hosts resides inside of you? Don’t spend more time in the wilderness.

1 Corinthians 10:13

13For no temptation (no trial regarded as enticing to sin), [no matter how it comes or where it leads] has overtaken you and laid hold on you that is not common to man [that is, no temptation or trial has come to you that is beyond human resistance and that is not [b]adjusted and [c]adapted and belonging to human experience, and such as man can bear]. But God is faithful [to His Word and to His compassionate nature], and He [can be trusted] not to let you be tempted and tried and assayed beyond your ability and strength of resistance and power to endure, but with the temptation He will [always] also provide the way out (the means of escape to [d]a landing place), that you may be capable and strong and powerful to bear up under it patiently.

14Therefore, my dearly beloved, shun (keep clear away from, avoid by flight if need be) any sort of idolatry (of loving or venerating anything more than God).

15I am speaking as to intelligent (sensible) men. Think over and make up your minds [for yourselves] about what I say. [I appeal to your reason and your discernment in these matters.]

The Lord your God lives deep inside of you! Don’t be defeated by that piece of cheesecake, the credit card, over shopping, or being lazy.  STOP being a Sunday morning warrior and a Monday morning whiner.

3. BE PREPARED AHEAD OF TIME

You are GOING to have to KNOW GOD and SPEND TIME with God. Bible study DOES NOT replaces spending time with God. You MUST get to know yourself and your relationship with God. Figure out what Satin uses to steal your joy and be prepared when Satin kicks you again with those same boots. DO IT.

CHANGE DOES NOT HAPPEN GOING TO BIBLE STUDY. CHANGE HAPPENS WHEN YOU SPEND TIME WITH GOD! CHANGE HAPPENS WHEN YOU SURVIVE A TEMPTATION. A TRIAL.

Spend time with God and be prepared to do battle with Satin. Overcome the trials, and the temptations. It’s easy when you are prepared.

4. AVOID SCENES OF TEMPTATION

It is very important who you hang out with, become involved with, what you watch, the books you read, the music you listen too.
